LEDs, or "higher cost" Tri-Color LEDs like the ones used in our
Tri-Color
(Rainbow) Litecubes, which have three colors: red, green, and
blue. When the LEDs are pulsed by a microchip they can produce all
the colors in the light spectrum. LEDs can be programmed to have
hundreds of different speeds, motion, and color changing power for
dazzling special effects. A November 2003 article in EC&M magazine
touts the advantages of LED technology: "LED Technology boast a
relatively high efficacy, small size, fast strike/restrike time,
ease of dimming and control, and safe handling, thanks to 3V to
24V power supplies. LED units can also use an electronic control
system to provide dimming and color change operations.
LEDs are completely different from incandescent and fluorescent sources.
Since the composition of the materials determines the color of the
light produced by the LED, the solid-state source is energy efficient
wherever colored light is required. In the past, red light was produced
by placing a color filter in front of an incandescent or fluorescent
white light source, thus wasting a large part of the spectral energy
radiated by the light source. This makes LEDs attractive for all types
of display applications where color and other attention getting features,
such as raid on-off flashing, is important.

Microprocessor-based electronic controllers handle the programmable
features of the system: animated sequences, voltage and frequency,
on and off time, and various special effects. By manipulating
